In the sense of contributing towards the attainment of the 17 Global Goals by 2030, Open Space Center partnered with Towa Uchafu na Nusu – a youth group whose initiative centered on running campaigns focused on improving the waste management practices in households in the Old Kampala community. Most of the households in the communities in Kampala are in a dilapidated state with inadequate solid waste management practices.

Kampala, UGANDA – On 28th October, Open Space Center, together with youth leaders from Old Kampala – Towa Uchafu Na Nusu – conducted a community awareness drive to one of the city suburbs on proper waste management practices and also see to it that they can earn a living from it. During the community outreach, materials like recyclable waste bags were provided to the different homesteads, with instructions on segregating waste such as plastics from organic waste which would in turn serve as a revenue source for households through partitioning the plastic in Kilos. By doing so the initiative directly contributes to the attainment of SDG 6, 12 and SDG 1 ( clean water and sanitation and no poverty) which ultimately contributes to positive health outcomes in communities.

Towa Uchafu na Nusu is an initiative that was started by a member of the CSO-CTF (Community task force) that we created in March 2021, comprising community leaders and persons passionate about change and development to better reach to the communities about Sustainable Development Goals and ensure effective localization of the global goals.
